Using a claw tool and mallet to dress sandstone. The forty millimeter claw tool fits into a claw tool holder, and it scrapes the sandstone surface ready for finishing with a flat chisel. The claw tool, also known as a scutch tool, is driven with a nylon mallet. The nylon mallet is relatively soft and elastic compared to a steel hammer, and it allows the claw tool to scrape instead of ‘plucking’ or tearing chunks out of the surface. The claw tool striking end must be rounded to protect the mallet from damage.
